Kevin Rigdon used three different Roscolux colors to create this moment in The Grapes Of Wrath. He describes both his goals and his technique in the text below.

Kevin Rigdon
"I USED COLOR TO PROVIDE SEPARATION AND FOCUS"

Most people use Roscolux filters in stage lighting to establish the time of day or to help convey a mood.

In the hands of the most sensitive designers, Roscolux filters can do a lot more. Take Kevin Rigdon, for example. He used Roscolux filters to provide both separation and focus within a scene ... and the work was so brilliant he was nominated for Tony Awards in both scenery and lighting for that production! Here is how Kevin Rigdon describes it:

"With the wide open scenic design of The Grapes Of Wrath, I had to rely heavily on color to provide separation and focus within a scene. In the scene shown here, I lit the foreground with R68 (Sky Blue) as a back light and R67 (Light Sky Blue) from the side. This created a crisp, cool look. The action upstage is bathed in warm, lush R20 (Medium Amber) from diagonal front shin busters."

Contrasting the crisp, cool Roscolux blue colors with the warmth of Roscolux Medium Amber helped generate a sense of separation and additional focus on the actors upstage. It also created a beautiful and appropriate stage picture.

This is a scene from A Streetcar Named Desire, in the Broadway revival production lit by Kevin Rigdon. The playwright describes the poker scene as having "the lurid nocturnal brilliance of Van Gogh's painting of a billiard parlor at night." Rigdon, seeking to follow Tennessee Williams' description, used R11 (Light Straw) in a soft down light, R09 (Pale Amber Gold) in high backlights and R365 (Tharon Delft Blue) with gobos.

Showcloth THE NO-NOISE, NO RESIDUE HAZER

If you want a haze effect on your stage or in your studio - but don't want the noise of the machine or the oily residue left by mineral oil fluids, the Hazemaker II may be just the instrument for you. It uses a fluid which contains no animal vegetable or mineral oil and is water soluble. It will leave neither residue nor water droplets. The machine requires an external air compressor which yo need to supply, but you can locate it, and the noise it generally creates, a far from the Hazemaker II as practical ... often 30 or 40 feet or more!

Traditionally, gobos have been used in stage lighting to create shapes and shadows. Rosco's Image Glass™ gobos are different. These deeply textured glass patterns, positioned in the gobo slot of modern fixtures, will refract and bend the light into intricate patterns of light and gray scale images. Altering the focus of the fixture, usually by adjusting the barrel length ("running the barrel") widens the range of textures available!

HOW TO CHOOSE A DANCE FLOOR

The two crucial factors most people consider in choosing a dance floor are: "how will it be used?" and second, "how does it feel?" to the people wh use it.

"How does it feel?" is usually determined by examining a hand held sample. These samples are available free, yours for the asking. "How will it be used?" is a little more complex. All four Rosco floors can be used for ballet, modern or jazz dancing. But only Adagio™ can be used successfully for tap or flamenco dancing. All four floors can be used for touring and can be installed with double-stick or vinyl tape for semi-permanent use. But only Royale™ and Adagio are dimensionally stable and can thus be installed by contractors without distortion of the floor surface. Two of the floors, Cabriole™ and Royale, are cushioned for those who prefer that feature; the other two, Adagio and Rosco Dance Floor are traditional vinyl.

If your facility will require a new or additional floor soon, please let us supply you with information, prices and samples.
