For more information on the complete line of Rosco Flamex products, get a copy of Flame Treating Scenery. The Flamex flyer covers most questions you may have and how to use each product. It also covers how to test, ensuring that the Flamex product is applied correctly.

1. Which of the Flamex products works on Wood?

See our Flame Retardant Chart to choose the right Flamex for your job…

2. I need to flameproof a drop but I have already painted it. What can I do?

It is desirable to flameproof the substrate wherever possible. If you have already painted your drop, flip it over on its face and apply flame retardant (C26 if it is muslin) to the back. The exposed fabric should be able to absorb enough material to achieve proper flame retardance.

3. Can I add P50 to any paint?

We do not guarantee that P50 will go into solution with all paints. P50 may be safely added to Off Broadway, Supersaturated Roscopaint and Iddings Deep Colors. Please do a test before using with any other type of paint to assure compatibility. P50 should not be used in any water borne acrylic enamel products.

4. I need to flameproof the raw wood on my set. Can I treat it and paint afterwards?

W40 is the appropriate Flamex for use on raw wood. Rosco encourages you to leave the wood unpainted after treatment. Using W40 can leave a surface that is difficult for good paint adhesion. If you need to paint the wood in your scenery use P50 treated paint instead of W40.

5. Will S33 leave any residue on my material?

Because such a wide variety is currently available, thorough testing is necessary before the application of S33 to any synthetic fiber. A powdery, white residue is possible if the concentration of S33 is too strong. Begin testing S33 straight out of the jug. If a residue is apparent, let the mixture down with 10% water and re-test. You may use up to 30% water in your solution.

6. Which Flamex should I use on hay?

W40 should be used on hay. The best method of application is immersion. Since this is not practical for most of us there is another way. Hay bales are actually sections bound together with binder twine. Remove the binder twine and separate the sections. Each section may now be immersed in the W40, allowed to dry and re-assembled.

7. I need to flameproof some costumes, which Flamex will work for this?

Rosco does not recommend the use of Flamex on costumes.
